在巨大成功的专辑《Room for Squares》发行的两年以后，已然成为了格莱美奖得主的John Mayer终于发行了他的第三张录音室专辑《Heavier Things》，新专辑上市以后销量持续飙高，最终首周达到了31万6千张，轻松的把John Mayer送到了排行榜冠军的宝座上，这也是他首次站在塔尖上，无论是单周销量还是排行榜的排名都创下了个人的最高记录，此前他只有专辑《Room for Squares》曾经以12万多张的单周销量进入过Billboard 200的前十名。 这张专辑由美国著名的唱片制作人Jack Joseph Puig全权打造，这位曾经为包括Eric Clapton等许多大牌歌星和乐队担任制作人的老手已经把John Mayer多年的老搭档John Alagia挤走了。然而这张专辑确实没有让人失望，不仅商业上获得丰收，而且还赢得了苛刻的美国乐评界一致的好评。这是一张非常成熟的专辑，虽然没有过分的宣传和包装，但是专辑的歌曲流露出制作人的精心和细腻，快节奏时的微调，以及旋律转变的谐和等等，使得歌曲显得自然流畅。与过去的歌曲相比，新专辑中的歌曲更富有张力，从硬到柔，从快到慢，悦耳的旋律和真实的歌词被John Mayer拿捏的非常到位，而且歌词也比以往更有深度。制作人和编曲的功力也体现的非常淋漓尽致，比如《Split Screen Sadness》中用键盘造出的背景不和谐音来烘托出爱情破裂时的氛围，以及诗般的《Clarity》中用爵士小号营造的温馨等。 整个专辑中的歌曲谐和悦耳，歌曲中融合布鲁斯，爵士，摇滚，RB等多种音乐的元素，配之以John Mayer出色的歌词，以及老牌制作人的悉心料理，再加上John Mayer永不止步的音乐理想，可以想象这一张专辑又将会是对各大奖项来说非常有冲击力的作品。
约翰・克雷顿・梅耶（英语：John Clayton Mayer，1977年10月16日－），美国创作歌手。梅、耶生于康乃狄克州，在1997年搬家至佐治亚州亚特兰大之前，于柏克理音乐学院进修音乐、并获得了一些支持者。他的首二张专辑《发声中心》（Room for Squares）及《甜蜜负荷》（Heavier Things）表现出色，为梅耶赢得了多张白金认证。2003年，梅尔以歌曲〈Your Body Is a Wonderland〉一曲赢得葛莱美奖最佳流行男歌手。 梅耶初期的曲风以摇滚及流行为主。直到2005年与著名的蓝调歌手如比・比・金及艾瑞克・克莱普顿合作，而逐渐转型为蓝调歌手，并组成约翰梅耶三重奏（John Mayer Trio）推广蓝调。蓝调的曲风可以从2006年推出的专辑《声声不息》（Continuum）中明显感觉到。2007年，梅尔分别以专辑《声声不息》及歌曲〈Waiting on the World to Change〉赢得第四十九届葛莱美奖最佳流行专辑及最佳流行男歌手。梅尔的事业后来扩展至单口喜剧片（stand-up comedy，粤语：栋笃笑）、设计及写作；他并曾为杂志写了一些文章，大部份刊登于时尚先生杂志（Esquire）。梅尔亦透过他创办的Back to You 基金会参与慈善活动，并关注全球暖化问题。
